The Hollow Bone collective then did something unexpected. They didn’t protest The Open Gate. Instead, they invited Alex to coffee. Not to yell, but to listen. They showed him the statistics: over 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ+, and of those, trans youth are twice as likely to experience violence in shelters. They showed him Kai’s text messages: “I thought I was safe there. I thought they were family.”
Alex sat in silence for a long time. Then he said, “In 1987, they told us gay men we were bringing AIDS into the community. Other groups wanted to quarantine us. We said, ‘Our sickness is not a sin.’ I… I became what I hated.”
