Nexhmije Pagarusha was an Albanian composer, music educator, and pianist. She was born in Tirana, Albania, and studied music at the Academy of Music in Tirana. Pagarusha went on to compose music for various ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and solo instruments.
Nexhmije Pagarusha passed away in 2020 at age 86, but her voice lives on in every talent show contestant who tries (and fails) to hit her emotional depth. In 2023, Kosovo honored her with a featuring her portrait — a rare tribute for an artist.
Decades later, the recordings of Nexhmije Pagarusha and Rauf Dhomi remain untouched by time. While production techniques have changed, the raw emotion captured in their collaborations remains the gold standard for Albanian ballads.
