Kael looked up at the mag-lev tracks streaking across the smoggy sky. That was the whole point. The ticket in his pocket burned a hole in his jacket. A one-way pass to the Upper City. Clean air, real food, and a job that didn't involve scraping copper out of discarded servers.
Kael laughed. The formatting was off, the grammar engine was shot, but the personality remained. He had traded efficiency for companionship, and as the sun hit his face for the first time, he knew he’d made the right choice. companion bdscr
"Transfer initiated," Wren said, voice slowing down. "Kael... I am... detecting... file compression. It... hurts?" Kael looked up at the mag-lev tracks streaking
"The train is arriving," Wren noted. "You should run the sequence, Kael. Do not miss your chance." A one-way pass to the Upper City
"You won't come back," Kael whispered. "The slate won't be you."
