QuickTime 2.0 (System 7) introduced the extension architecture in earnest. For content creators, this was liberating. Instead of waiting for Apple to support a new camera format or compression algorithm, a developer could write a component, drop it into the Extensions folder, and restart. Suddenly, every QuickTime-aware app—Adobe Premiere, Macromedia Director, even web browsers via the embed tag—gained that capability.
