The confusion between terminal and instrumental desires is the source of much modern dissatisfaction. We often mistake the means for the end.
Consider the classic example of wealth. For many, money is purely instrumental. It buys freedom, experiences, and comfort. However, society often conditions us to treat money as a terminal desire—we accumulate it endlessly, sacrificing the very things (leisure, relationships, peace) that money was supposed to facilitate.
