How to Take Apart an InSinkErator Garbage Disposal: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide Taking apart a garbage disposal is often necessary for clearing severe jams, replacing worn parts (like the shredder ring or impellers), retrieving a lost item (like a fork or ring), or deep cleaning. Before you begin, understand that disassembly voids most warranties and carries risks. Proceed with caution. Safety First: Critical Warnings

Unplug the unit! Never rely on the wall switch. Disconnect the power cord from the outlet under the sink. If hardwired, turn off the circuit breaker. Use a flashlight – never put your hand inside the disposal opening without visual confirmation. Wear cut-resistant gloves – the shredder ring and impellers are extremely sharp. Lock the breaker if hardwired, or tape the wall switch in the OFF position.

Tools You Will Need

¼-inch hex key (Allen wrench) – often comes with the disposal Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers Large channel-lock pliers or a pipe wrench Bucket and towels Hammer and a wooden dowel (for freeing stuck rotor) Needle-nose pliers Work light InSinkErator wrench (specialty tool for some models) – optional

Part 1: Preparation and Removal from Sink Before you can take the disposal apart internally, you usually need to remove the entire unit from the sink mount. Step 1: Disconnect Plumbing

Place a bucket under the disposal. Loosen the slip nut connecting the disposal’s discharge tube to the drainpipe. If you have a dishwasher hose connected, loosen the clamp and pull it off. Expect water to drain out.

Step 2: Detach the Electrical Connection

If hardwired: Remove the junction box cover on the disposal and disconnect the wire nuts. Note wire colors (black to black, white to white, green/bare to ground). If plug-in: Simply unplug.

Step 3: Separate Disposal from Sink Mounting Ring

Most InSinkErator models use a 3-bolt mounting system. Insert a screwdriver into the mounting lugs and twist to loosen the lower ring. Support the disposal with one hand while turning the lower mounting ring counterclockwise (viewed from below). The disposal will drop once the ring is fully released.

Now you have the disposal on your workbench. Do not disassemble it while hanging under the sink.

Part 2: External Disassembly (Accessing the Interior) Step 4: Remove the Splash Guard and Baffle
