Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875), the great American revivalist and theologian, did not view God’s presence merely as an abstract theological concept. To Finney, the presence of God was a tangible, conscious reality—the very lifeblood of the believer and the fuel of every true revival. He taught that Christianity is not a set of mere intellectual propositions, but a living interaction with the Divine.

To experience the presence of God is to see heaven opened while still standing on earth.

Finney argued that while God is omnipresent, we do not always experience Him. Sin creates a veil. Experiencing His presence is synonymous with the "witness of the Spirit"—an inward impression that we are accepted, loved, and in communion with the Father. Finney insisted that this is not reserved for mystics or "super-Christians," but is the normal state for a believer living in obedience.

Elias read slowly. Finney spoke of a lawyer in his congregation who, while walking down a street in New York, was suddenly struck by a sense of God’s reality so overwhelming that he had to lean against a lamppost. Another man, a skeptic, felt the presence wash over him while sitting in a silent room—no vision, no voice, just a weight of holiness that brought him to his knees.
