Not every place experiences four distinct seasons.

Contrary to popular belief, seasons are not caused by how close the Earth is to the Sun. If that were the case, the entire world would have summer at the same time, which isn't true (when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere).

Winter is the coldest season. It occurs when a hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the Sun.
