The episode opens with a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche: "And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." We see a lone figure riding a bicycle through a desolate, overgrown Winden. This is (now bearded and hardened, referred to as "The Stranger" in the future). He is living in a bunker, rationing canned food, and trying to fix a yellow radiation suit. The world appears to have ended following the apocalypse hinted at in the previous season.
