In the modern OTT (Over-The-Top) media landscape, content must be delivered to a diverse array of devices—smart TVs, mobile phones, and desktop browsers—each supporting different streaming protocols. The two dominant standards are HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH).

A critical challenge in repackaging is accurate seeking. ABR streaming requires segments to begin with a keyframe (I-frame). If the source file does not have keyframes aligned with the target segment duration (e.g., every 2 seconds), the repackager cannot cleanly cut the segment. StreamRepack represents a convergence of piracy distribution and malware delivery. As free streaming continues to grow, so will repackaged players. Defenders must treat any third-party streaming binary as potentially malicious until validated. Future work could include automated unpacking and signature extraction for streaming-related repacks.
