A portable application is a program that does not require a traditional installation process. It does not write settings or registry entries to the host computer's system drive (usually C:). Instead, all configuration files, temporary data, and the executable itself reside within a single folder. When you unplug the storage device or delete the folder, the software leaves no traces behind.
