The Codex acts as the repository for this synthesis. As players investigate crime scenes, the Codex populates with clues, locations, and suspect profiles. It forces the player to engage in the practice of "mental geography," linking a bloody tire iron found in an alleyway to a specific address discovered on a matchbook. Without the Codex, the game’s intricate plots—often involving complex conspiracies regarding land deals, morphine rings, and police corruption—would dissolve into confusion.
