Born as on November 20, 1977, in Hannah, South Carolina, he was raised in a musical and religious household. He began singing in his church choir and later formed a gospel quartet called the Thankful Hearts. In 1996, his career was nearly derailed by a lesion on his vocal cord, requiring a year of total vocal rest to heal. He eventually moved to Nashville to pursue music, attending Belmont University and making his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2001, where he received a rare standing ovation for an original song, "Long Black Train".
