The real "legend" behind the story is Richard Matheson , one of the most influential science fiction and horror writers of the 20th century.

The title "I Am Legend" takes on different meanings depending on the version. In the novel, Neville realizes that to the new species of mutants, he is the terrifying "legend" or monster who hunts them by day. Growing up in a middle-class family, Smith's parents, Willard and Caroline, encouraged his love for music and performance. He developed a passion for rap at a young age, and by the time he was 12, he was already rapping with his friends in local clubs and parties. Under the stage name "The Fresh Prince," Smith formed a hip-hop duo with his friend Jeff Townes, known as DJ Jazzy Jeff. The duo's big break came in 1987 with the hit single "Parents Just Don't Understand," which earned them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance.
