On the afternoon of Republic Day, 2010, a catastrophic roof collapse occurred in the New Kenda colliery, approximately 30 km from Asansol. At approximately 2:00 PM, a massive section of the roof in the underground gallery collapsed, trapping several miners. The immediate impact was compounded by the blockage of escape routes and the potential disruption of ventilation systems essential for survival deep underground.
