Ashton Kutcher plays the "charming goofball" role perfectly, but the movie is anchored by Natalie Portman. It is rare to see Portman in a pure romantic comedy (she usually does dramas like Black Swan or Jackie ). Her performance brings a level of depth to the character of Emma that elevates the film above standard rom-com fluff.
