Sonam Kapoor’s Zoya is frequently criticized as a passive object of desire, but a closer reading reveals a more complex figure. Zoya is the only rational person in the film. She repeatedly tells Kundan she does not love him. She makes her own choices—choosing education, choosing Jasjeet, choosing activism.
