To go "softly over" is to practice the art of non-disturbance in a place haunted by disturbance. The South is a region where the past is not dead; it isn't even past, as Faulkner reminded us, but it is also a place where the past is buried shallowly. The soil of the Yazoo basin is composed of centuries of erosion, of topsoil washed down from the hills and deposited in the floodplains. It is a graveyard of geology.
