Following her graduation from UCLA, Thometz transitioned into coaching. She returned to her alma mater to serve as an assistant coach for the UCLA women’s swimming and diving team under head coach Cyndi Gallagher. During her tenure on the coaching staff, she helped mentor the next generation of UCLA swimmers and contributed to the team’s continued success in the Pac-10 conference.
In 1993, as a freshman, Thometz won the Pac-10 championship in the 1650-yard freestyle. Her time of 16:16.90 set a conference record at the time and established her as a dominant force in collegiate distance swimming.
