However, the true shock to the system came with Kaminey (2009). Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, this film shattered Shahid’s nice-guy image. He played a double role as twin brothers with speech impediments—one a gangster, the other a simpleton. The physical transformation and the aggression he brought to the character of Charlie were unlike anything he had done before. Kaminey proved that Kapoor had the range to tackle dark, complex narratives. He followed this up with the critically panned Chance Pe Dance and the lukewarm Paathshaala , but the seed of versatility had been planted.
