The 2010s saw the band experimenting with a more produced, pop-oriented sound. Collapsible Lung (2013) was divisive among die-hard fans; it leaned heavily into synth-pop and featured co-writes with mainstream pop producers. While the lyrics were still clever, the "rock" edge was softened.

The story begins in Canton, Ohio, in 1998. High school friends (vocals/guitar) and Matt Hoopes (guitar) formed the band, naming it after guitarist Brian Pittman 's Plymouth Reliant K car. Joined by drummer Dave Douglas , they cut their teeth playing churches and skate parks. relient k now
