Use a comma and no spaces.

In-text references are placed in [1] and should be numbered sequentially. Single Source: "As demonstrated by Smith [1]..." Two Sources: Separate numbers with a comma: [1, 2]. asme citation guide

Use a dash for three or more consecutive citations: [5-7]. Use a comma and no spaces

This system allows a reader to glance at the superscript, drop to the bottom of the page or end of the document, and immediately retrieve the source without re-reading a sentence. asme citation guide

ASME is strict. If you cite a personal email or an unarchived lab report, it goes only in the text as a footnote or a note within the sentence. It never appears in the reference list because the reader cannot retrieve it.
