Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a 27-year-old investment banker living in Manhattan during the late 1980s. He is wealthy, handsome, and engaged to a socialite (Reese Witherspoon). On the surface, he lives the American Dream. However, beneath the designer suits and the obsession with business cards and restaurant reservations, Bateman is a psychopath with an insatiable need to fit in—and a violent compulsion to "fit in" his victims to body bags.
There is a further moral layer to the search for a free American Psycho . The film is a tightrope walk over the abyss of misogyny and graphic violence. Harron and co-writer Guinevere Turner deliberately adapted Ellis’s novel to critique the male gaze, turning Bateman’s violence into something absurd and pathetic rather than aspirational. However, when a viewer downloads a low-quality, unlicensed version from a sketchy website, they remove the film from its critical frame. They strip away the context of the Criterion Collection essays, the director’s commentary, and the curated viewing experience.
It is impossible to review this film without highlighting Christian Bale’s transformative performance. Bale plays Bateman not as a human being, but as a simulacrum of one. He adopts a generic "American" accent (described in the film as a mix of "Long Island and British"), which highlights the character's lack of identity.
