Born in the late 19th century near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Anna’s life was marred by tragedy early on. Her mother, a woman of deep, almost feverish Catholic faith, died when Anna was young. Her father, a man described in historical accounts as an alcoholic and abusive figure, became the center of a dark domestic storm.

The trauma fractured something within Anna. In 1912, she began exhibiting strange symptoms: an aversion to holy water, an inability to enter a church, and violent mood swings. When medical science failed to provide a cure, her aunt, a devout woman, turned to the Church. That year, Father Riesinger performed a successful, albeit quiet, exorcism.
