In the original folk tale, a king’s son discovers a cellar containing three monsters. He frees the third, (literally "Steelhead"), who immediately kidnaps the hero’s sister/wife. The hero fails to kill Baš Čelik because the monster’s soul is hidden inside an egg, inside a duck, inside a hare, inside a wolf, inside a chest, inside a mountain. With the help of a baba (wise old woman) and magical animals, the hero retrieves the egg, crushes it, and kills Baš Čelik.

"Baš Čelik" remains a masterpiece of Serbian oral tradition. It transcends the simple formula of the fairy tale to offer a story about the burdens of power and the necessity of mercy. The eponymous villain serves as a mirror to the hero: both are bound by the follies of others (the King's promise, the brothers' jealousy) and both must suffer to restore balance.
