I do not write this to make you fear your desktop. I write this because the window manager is the most used, least understood piece of software in your life. It mediates every click, every drag, every pixel of your digital work.

This is the deepest truth:

Understanding that it is a construct—a set of compromises between performance, policy, and physics—can make you a better user. When a window lags, you will know: the compositor missed a frame. When focus jumps unexpectedly, you will know: the policy engine made a choice you did not intend. actual window manager
