As the plane ascends or descends, the air pressure outside the ear changes, causing the Eustachian tube (a small tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat) to expand and contract. When this tube becomes blocked, the air pressure in the ear becomes unequal, leading to discomfort and clogging.
