Indian films have had a cyclical presence in Romania since the 1970s and 1980s, during the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Unlike Western productions, which were heavily censored, Indian films—especially those starring Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and later, Shah Rukh Khan—were perceived as ideologically safe: they emphasized family, tradition, and moral justice, aligning with socialist realism’s preference for clear moral dichotomies.
