The first thing to do when dealing with a blocked toilet is to turn off the water supply to the toilet. You can usually find the shut-off valve behind the toilet or near the floor. Turn the valve clockwise to shut off the water supply. This will prevent more water from flowing into the toilet bowl and making the situation worse.
