Central Khmer Language

Central Khmer is the vehicle of . It preserves the caste system of honorifics (using different words for "eat" depending on who is doing the eating: nyam for commoners, hop for monks, pisa for royalty). It is the language of the Reamker (the Khmer version of the Ramayana) and the classical Yike theater.

For example, the simple act of eating changes entirely depending on who is performing the action. A commoner eats ( njam ), a monk eats ( cʰan ), and a king eats ( saɔj ).
