When we first meet Mikoto, she's a high school student with the ability to control and manipulate electricity. At this point, she's still learning to control her powers and navigate her relationships with her friends and classmates. Despite her tough exterior, Mikoto is shown to be vulnerable and unsure of herself, often struggling to balance her life as a student and a hero.

The second phase of this four-year deterioration is the emergence of the Other. The pressure of maintaining a flawless exterior necessitated a release valve. In Mikoto’s psyche, this valve was the creation of an alternate personality—often referred to by fans as "John," though the entity is essentially a manifestation of his aggression and self-preservation. This split was not a sudden supernatural occurrence, but a psychological necessity born of exhaustion. As the "good" Mikoto continued to smile and accept burdens, the "other" Mikoto absorbed the rage, the resentment, and the trauma. Over the course of these years, the boundary between the host and the alter blurred. The breakdown here is characterized by dissociation; Mikoto began to lose time, losing control over the body he was trying so hard to perfect.
