Jacob held his breath. His hand hovered over the mouse. If he loaded the game, the file would vanish. That was the rule of Hardcore. If you die, you are erased. The file corrupts, the game deletes the avatar, leaving only a ghost in the "Dead Heroes" list in the main menu.

Yet, Jacob couldn't bring himself to check. He couldn't bear to see the empty space in the character select screen where his brother’s obsession used to be.

Jacob’s computer fans began to whir aggressively. He looked at the folder path at the top of his screen. The directory was changing.
