House of Leaves is intended to be performative. In its physical form, the reader must physically rotate the heavy tome, flip back and forth between appendices, and track multiple narratives simultaneously. This "work" mirrors the physical exhaustion of the characters lost in the house’s dark hallways. An EPUB streamlines this process. Hyperlinked footnotes allow for instant jumping, which removes the "friction" that Danielewski carefully engineered. In the digital space, the labyrinth becomes a series of shortcuts, potentially diluting the atmospheric tension that defines the experience. Ultimately, while a digital version increases accessibility for international audiences or those without access to the rare physical editions, it remains an incomplete translation.
The book features layers of footnotes—sometimes footnotes within footnotes—that often require flipping back and forth between hundreds of pages.
