Spring is Japan’s most famous season, synonymous with sakura (cherry blossoms). It is a time of new beginnings—the school and fiscal year start in April.

This is the peak of spring. Parks are filled with people practicing Hanami (flower viewing). The weather is mild and pleasant, though popular sites can be very crowded.

The heat turns up. July is the start of the Matsuri (festival) season. Expect massive parades, street food, and spectacular fireworks ( Hanabi ) displays. Mount Fuji also officially opens for climbing this month.

Many seasoned travellers prefer autumn over spring. The air becomes crisp, the skies clear, and the maple trees turn a brilliant fiery red.

Before diving month-by-month, remember this rule: is the baseline. The northern island of Hokkaido runs about one month behind (later spring, earlier winter), while Okinawa runs about two months ahead (cherry blossoms in January).
