Tanzu Licensing Cost __link__: Vmware

This review is written from the perspective of an enterprise architect or platform engineer who has evaluated or deployed Tanzu.

Review: VMware Tanzu Licensing Costs – Powerful Platform, Painful Price Tag Overall Verdict: Tanzu is a first-class Kubernetes platform for deep VMware shops, but its licensing is complex, opaque, and expensive. It is not for small teams or cloud-native purists. Expect "sticker shock" and budget for a 20–30% year-over-year increase. The Cost Breakdown (As of 2024–2025) VMware (now Broadcom) has radically simplified Tanzu licensing post-acquisition—but "simplified" doesn't mean cheap. You now have two main editions : | Edition | Pricing Model | Approximate Annual Cost (per core) | Best For | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Tanzu Platform (formerly Tanzu Standard/Plus) | Per available core (vCPU) in the cluster | $1,250 – $1,500 | Full lifecycle management, multi-cluster ops, built-in ingress/service mesh | | Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) Integrated Edition | Included free with vSphere Foundation or vSphere+ | $0 (but requires vSphere subscription at ~$350/core) | Basic K8s clusters on vSphere without advanced features |

Note: Broadcom eliminated "per pod" and "per VM" models. You now pay for every core where Tanzu runs, regardless of utilization.

The Hidden Costs (The "Tanzu Tax") Many teams underestimate these three factors: 1. The vSphere Dependency Tanzu on-prem requires vSphere 7/8 with Enterprise Plus licensing. If you don't already own it, add $350–$500 per core before you even install Tanzu. 2. The Broadcom "True-Up" Shock Post-acquisition, Broadcom audits aggressively. Tanzu licensing counts available cores, not used cores. If you have a 64-core host running only 16 cores for Tanzu workloads, you still license all 64. Overprovisioning kills your budget. 3. The Missing Features Lower editions lack: vmware tanzu licensing cost

Multi-cluster management (adds ~$300/core/year) Integrated service mesh (requires Tanzu Service Mesh at $800/core/year) Buildpacks & supply chain tools (Tanzu Build Service adds another $400/core/year)

Comparison: Tanzu vs. The Competition | Platform | Annual Cost (for 100 cores) | Effort to Manage | Portability | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | VMware Tanzu | $125,000 – $200,000+ | Low (if already VMware) | Low (locked to vSphere) | | OpenShift (Self-managed) | $100,000 – $150,000 | Medium | Medium (runs on any infra) | | Rancher (Prime) | $50,000 – $75,000 | High | High (any K8s distro) | | EKS/AKS/GKE (Managed) | $40,000 – $90,000 | Low (control plane only) | High (cloud-only) | Real-World Example: A 500-core deployment Let’s say you have:

500 vSphere cores across 25 hosts Running 100 production pods + 50 dev pods This review is written from the perspective of

Old pricing (pre-Broadcom): ~$75,000/year Current Tanzu Platform: ~$625,000/year (500 cores × $1,250) Add mandatory support (22%): ~$762,500/year That’s a 10x increase for many customers. Who Should Buy Tanzu? ✅ Do buy if:

You are 100% VMware on-prem with no cloud strategy. You need a single support contract for vSphere + K8s. Your team struggles with "plain" Kubernetes and needs GUI-heavy operations. Budget is not your primary constraint (e.g., finance, healthcare, govt).

❌ Do NOT buy if:

You run multi-cloud or hybrid cloud (Tanzu locks you to vSphere). You have a mature GitOps/DevOps team (they’ll find Tanzu restrictive). You want to avoid vendor lock-in (Tanzu uses non-standard CNI, CSI, and auth). Your total core count exceeds 200 (cost becomes irrational).

Final Tips for Negotiation Given Broadcom’s hardball tactics, try these:
