Digitizing Buddy

Collectors often seek out specific "vintage" issues from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s for their artistic and historical value.

The Bund für Freikörperkultur (Association for Free Body Culture) was officially founded in the late 1940s, but the spirit existed long before. The goal wasn't titillation; it was equality. In the sun, stripped of class indicators like clothing and jewelry, everyone was equal. The early "Sonnenfreunde pics" were grainy black-and-white photographs documenting this utopian lifestyle—families hiking, swimming, and playing volleyball, simply enjoying the rays without barrier.

Classic Sonnenfreunde photography is a study in light and shadow. Without the distraction of patterned clothing, the eye focuses on the human form interacting with sunlight. Photographers play with the harsh contrast of midday sun or the golden wash of "Golden Hour." The skin becomes a canvas, reflecting the environment whether it is the sparkling blue of a lake or the sandy beige of a dune.
