After losing the tips of his middle and ring fingers in a factory accident, Iommi fashioned homemade thimbles out of melted plastic bottle caps. To ease the pain of playing, he detuned his guitar, lowering the pitch and creating a sludgy, massive, crushing tone. This down-tuning (from standard E to roughly E-flat) gave the riffs a weight and thickness that no rock band had achieved before.
