To the uninitiated, a .nsp file is merely data. It is a container, a digital box of ones and zeros designed to trick a piece of hardware—an emulated processor or a modified Switch—into believing it is holding a licensed cartridge. It is the vessel for piracy, the tool of the tinkerer, the golden key for the digital nomad.
But while official ports rely on the lifeblood of corporate servers and storefronts, the NSP exists outside of time. When the eShop eventually shuts down for the Switch, as all digital storefronts eventually do, the NSP will remain. It is the file format of preservation.
