Michael Hart's inspiration for Project Gutenberg was born out of a desire to make knowledge freely available. During the summer of 1971, Hart was working on a summer project to digitize a copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. As he reflected on the significance of this foundational American document, Hart realized that there existed a vast repository of literary works whose copyrights had expired, making them fair game for digitization and public dissemination. With the help of his friends and fellow students, Hart began to manually key in texts, starting with the Declaration of Independence and gradually expanding to include works by famous authors.
