This paper examines the multifaceted legacies of the Hindi language, moving beyond its status as a mere medium of communication to analyze its role as a tool of nation-building, a flashpoint for regional identity, and a vehicle for cultural soft power. By exploring the historical standardization of Hindi during the colonial era, the contentious "Hindi-Hindustani" debate, and its post-independence imposition as the official language, this study argues that the legacy of Hindi is characterized by a deep paradox: it serves as a unifying force for the majority while remaining a source of alienation and political resistance for non-Hindi speaking regions. Finally, the paper looks toward the "new" legacy of Hindi driven by globalization and digital media.
