Title: The Ultimate Guide to Partitioning Windows XP: From Fresh Install to Data Management (2026 Retrospective) Introduction: Why Partition XP in 2026? While Windows XP has been unsupported for over a decade, millions of legacy machines still run in industrial settings, retro gaming cabinets, and offline offices. Partitioning in XP is different than Windows 10/11. It is less forgiving, uses a classic MBR (Master Boot Record) layout, and lacks modern shrink tools. This guide covers two scenarios: Partitioning during a fresh install (the easiest way) and Partitioning within a running system (using Disk Management).

Part 1: The "Why" – Strategy for a 32-bit Era Drive Before clicking anything, decide on your layout. For a typical 40GB to 160GB hard drive (common for XP):

C: Drive (System) – 15GB to 20GB (NTFS). Windows XP + applications. Never go below 10GB; XP will choke. D: Drive (Data) – Remaining space (FAT32 or NTFS). Store your "My Documents," downloads, ROMs, and drivers. Hidden System Partition – XP Setup often creates a small 8MB or 50MB partition for boot files. Do not delete this. partition windows xp

Why two partitions? If XP corrupts its registry on C:, you can wipe and reinstall Windows without touching your saved files on D:.

Part 2: Method One – Partitioning During Fresh XP Installation (The "Clean Slate") This is the safest method. You are using the XP CD or USB installer. Step 1: Boot from your Windows XP CD. Step 2: Press ENTER to set up Windows. Step 3: Press F8 to accept the license. Step 4: You will see a list of existing partitions. Delete all partitions until you see "Unpartitioned space." Step 5: Create the C: Drive

Select Unpartitioned space and press C . Size in MB: To make 20GB, type 20000 (1GB = ~1000MB in XP Setup). Press ENTER . You now have a "New (Raw)" partition. Steps to Create Partition on Windows 8

Step 6: Create the D: Drive (The Critical Step)

Look at the remaining space listed as "Unpartitioned space." Select it and press C again. Accept the default size (this will be all remaining space). Press ENTER .

Step 7: Format Correctly

Highlight the first partition (C:). Choose Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick) . Pro tip: Never use FAT32 for C: on XP. You lose security permissions and file compression. Repeat for D: (again, use NTFS unless you need FAT32 for a dual-boot with Win98).

Result: You will boot into XP with a clean C: and D: drive.
